From the programme (1998):

The action of the play takes place in the garden of a vicarage-type house during a weekend in July. Time - the present.

ALAN AYCKBOURN
Born in London in 1939, ALAN AYCKBOURN is better known for dark comedies about middle-class life and is one of the more prolific dramatists of the 2Oth century. He was educated at Haileybury school and the Imperial Service College.

His early plays from 1959-61 were published under the pseudonym Roland Allen although lack of early success led him to join the BBC as a producer.

The audience laughs at his characters but often realise that they lead sad and empty lives. For example, in "Woman in Mind" (1985) a neglected homemaker invents an imaginary family who become more real to her than her own family.

Ayckbourn is noted for the clever use of stage space and dramatic structure. "The Norman Conquests" (1973) Is actually three plays, each about events taking place in different parts of a country house at the same time. In "Taking Steps" (1979), the same set represents three different places.

His first success was "Meet My Father" in 1967 but Ayckbourn first gained international recognition with "How the Other Half Loves" (1969). His other plays include "Absurd Person Singular" (1972), "Absent Friends" (1974), "Bedroom Farce" (1975), "Joking Apart" (1978), "Sisterly Feelings" (1979), "A Chorus of Disapproval" (1984), "A Small Family Business" (1987), "Man of the Moment" (1988), "Mr. A's Amazing Maze plays" (1989) and "invisible Friends" (1991).

Ayckbourn is the artistic director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre-in-the-Round in Scarborough where most of his comedies premier.
