FROM THE PROGRAMME

The Play

The beautiful and independent Diana, Countess of Belflor, has many amorous suitors. But romance doesn’t interest her until she discovers Teodoro, her secretary, pursuing Marcela, her lady-in-waiting. Now Diana wants him, a mere servant, for herself. Dare she defy society and her gobsmacked household? Mistakes, fakes and heartaches abound in this seriously barking comedy!

The Author

Lope de Vega, a contemporary of Shakespeare, sailed with the Spanish Armada, and would become Spain’s greatest playwright. He wrote ‘The Dog in the Manger’ around 1615 and it stands as one of his finest comic achievements. This lively translation by David Johnston, was used by the Royal Shakespeare for an acclaimed production in 2004
