Notes - The Production

Andy Hibbert made his first appearance with Midland Players last May in response to a plea for an actor (to step in at late notice) for our charity production of Comic Potential. This was a great success, raising over £3000 for Bluebell Wood. Andy, who has performed in many musicals and plays with various companies in Sheffield, is now back with us to direct, having previously directed for Meersbrook Theatre Group. Directing seems to be taking over from acting for Andy as his next venture will be directing Southey M.T.G.’s production of Summer Holiday in November.

‘Tomb’ sees on stage several newcomers to Midland Players. Alongside regulars Frank, Emma and Catherine (just recovered from our last production!) and Val and Phil, we welcome John and Jan from Dore & Totley URC group, Jake who has performed at the Merlin Theatre, and Danni and Rachel who have both appeared here many times as members of Splinters Theatre Group.

Notes - The  Author

Norman Robbins is probably best known for writing pantomimes - in fact he is reputed to be the most prolific author of pantos in the world. His first, Sing a Song of Sixpence, was written in 1952 and is still listed by Samuel French (the leading agents for playwrights in the UK), along with 20 more pantomimes. These include all the favourites, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and so on.

Initially writing was just a hobby and Robbins worked for many years as an actor, performing (often in Pantomime!), with stars like  Ken Dodd, Danny la Rue, and Morecambe & Wise.  Eventually he found himself acting less and writing more.

Robbins has written nearly a dozen plays, mainly comedy thrillers. These include Tiptoe Through the Tombstones – a sequel to Tomb With a View, though none of the characters are the same – you will see why!
